A game I made

Postby Julian » Sat Sep 10, 2011 1:06 pm

As some may know I do create my own games.
Of course these aren't as good as Ironhide's ones... I am just 17 years old and I am a beginner :]
Still I want to share a game I coded in an engine called 'GameMaker', which is a remake (and improved) version of the German game 'Achtung die kurve!' (watch out for the curve) with lots of new options to enhance the gameplay experience.

Achtung die Kurve is a simple snake-like game that's yet very fun to play with friends. There are enough games that you can play with 2, 3 or 4 people on one keyboard, but this one lets you play with up to 8 people =)
Every player controls an ever-growing line and must prevent their line from hitting any other line or the outer boundaries, by using a key for turning left and a key for turning right.

Download version 1.3 here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43582062/Achtung.exe

And here's some fancy screenshot for you:

(note: these are uncontrolled and therefor straight lines in a round which just started)

Not necesarrily. You can play on your own, but the game is not made for that.
So yeah, not really recommended unless you want to be pointless =)

I also made a game at summer camp. On the same computer, someone had made an rpg which was pretty much on about the same level as one made by a proffesional gme developer except for the graphics as it was made on MicroWorlds. Now I have fulfilled my goal of having the last post on every forum with topics.

2 days ago I started working on a new game, which is going to be a RTS (real time strategy)
in which you control just one laborer, instead of a whole kingdom.
Gather resources, build buildings, hire mercenaries and defeat the enemy!

Here's a fancy screenshot, even though the map is really empty right now...
I do not make full work days of game creating :D :

My art may not be the best but it does the job... getting better at programming every day =)

p.s.
I am not sure if I will upload any screenshots of all games I created between achtung die kurve
and this one... I guess not, most aren't finished and it wouldn't be too interesting anyway

Thankies, and it does perfectly ^^
I feel like that if I practice more I do not make fewer mistakes... I just find them faster.
The latest bug I sorted out here was cubeguy falling through a single piece of ground (40 * 40 pixels)
if his vertical speed was too high. I Immediately knew that, because of the high speed, he was above it at one frame,
and already past it at the next frame, and therefore didn't detect collision.
so I added a maximum vertical speed and it worked fine afterwards :D

Excellent job Julian . :D

Thanks :D

Today I added trees and rocks, which are going to be gatherable.
I also added some simple UI, with room for information about how many resources you
have collected and for an inventory with 10 slots ^^

I am not sure if you would call it modes but the following options available to enhance the gameplay:
- holes: the player-controlled lines will sometimes make a hole, which allowes up for some risky maneuvers if players try to steer their way through a hole to get out of a dead end
- powerups: 5 different kinds of power-ups will appear over time. The first player to touch it gets a bonus effect, which can effect either only himself or all remaining players. The 5 kinds are: getting slower for a few seconds, getting faster for a few seconds, being able to move through lines for a few seconds, inversing everyone's controls for a few seconds and making all lines invisible for one second
- continuous boundaries: touching a boundary will no longer cause death. Instead you'll appear at the other side of the playing screen

You can also switch full-screen on or off, change the amount of points needed to win, change the game speed and change the player's names =)

Julian, apart from gamemaker, have you considered similar tools to create crossplatform games such as gamesalad or stencyl ??
Stencyl has a free version and you don't need to have a mac.
http://www.stencyl.com/
I've read that you can't export to ios with gamemaker unless they approve your game and you must share 50% besides.
